If I have the right person,I sailed with Phil on the MV.Elizabeth Bowater,in !971 when he was a cadet.I don't think I ever saw him without a glass of lager in his hand, and a lovely bloke to know, shame he's passed away.

Regret to report the death on 1/12/2011 of George Warder who served with LOF in the late 1950's early 60's. We served together on the London Tradition in 1959/60 when l was 3rd mate he was R/O. He had not been keeping to well for the past few years.

Sad to report the death of a Counties apprentice. Michael Turner, ex Charmouth Hill and Stamford Hill. He went on to become Master with Westminster dredging and finally served with Trinity House.

Sailed with Phil on my last LOF ship, Overseas Argonaut and last met him in Middlesbrough just before I emigrated (1980).

Always remember his ready wit - very sad news. Please pass on my condolences.

Thanks to everyone who got back to me regarding Les. I must agree that he was a great chap I remember on the Discoverer that he asked for a volunteer then in the next breath he said "Andy you will do, we are going to change a scraperbox this morning". I asked " What is a sacraperbox Sec"?. He just answered "Isnt that why you volunteered?. Bottom line is he was a really great man to work alongside with and made my first trip at sea so fantastic and if l remember right, l didnt even take my entire quota of leave that was due. I remember Archie Coulter very well, and if l remember correctly the other deck cadet on the Discoverer was know as Craig, maybe Archie with help me with this. Sorry to hear about all the passing away of really good men. Hope everyone else is doing great and in good spirits. Take Care everyone

I reproduce an e mail I received from Tony Hilliard (KC)
Thank you for calling to inform me of Phil's death. I as first trip cadet joined the London Banker in Liverpool with Phil in 1971 . Phil was the 3/O I think First trip with LOF and he was ex Clan Line and he had worked on their passenger ships. Phil was every cadets idol, dashing and always fun and willing to get us involved. The other cadet was Colin Archer and the 2/O was Peter Lee The Captain was John Humby Senior.

I will see if I can find my cadets journal and see what notes I have of the time.

Please pass my condolences to Phil's family. You mentioned when we last met that he was very unwell. Within I so much wanted to contact Phil but regret I kept on putting it off. We regret most the things we don't do. If you have a contact address for his family I would send them a letter in due course.

Again thank you for taking the trouble to let me know the sad news.

I will get in touch again when back in Liverpool. I am away on holiday at present and not actually back in work till Oct 3rd.

When I first went to sea in 1971 (on the London Banker) Phil was 3rd Mate - He and I had kept in regular, almost weekly, contact since then. He passed away, fighting to the end, early on the morning of 19th September. He will be sorely missed and his brave sense of humour is a huge loss.
My deepest condolences to Hilary

The report of the tournament is in the LOF News archive (5D).

Left LOF early seventies and opened a scrapyard(?) in Gateshead. (It's a bit vague now).

I hope I'm wrong but I'm sure I read his obituary many years ago (mid eighties) in the Newcastle Evening Chronicle.

As I say, hope I'm wrong.
